How Early Professional Help Can Make a Difference in Your Life

"What would you say to your 18-year-old self?"

This question is usually asked of adults who are reflecting on their life to share lessons learned after healing. While some people view this question as an opportunity to inspire others, it is also a gentle reminder that at an early age, we all could have benefited from professional help.

Imagine what life would be like if you had the tools to understand your emotions and learn coping skills at an early age. The sadness, anger, frustration, low self-esteem, and negative thoughts could have been minimized to make room for more happiness, laughter, fun, and positive relationships during the teen years.

Give your teen a healthy start

Sometimes, parents just don't understand all of the problems and pressures that their teenager is facing. Yes, we have all been a teen before, but we don't share the same life experiences. Life is filled with challenges, and the teenage years are some of the toughest times in our lives. It is the time when childhood fades away, and we transition into a world that demands many things from us. Processing experiences from the early years, navigating the pressures of the teen years, and preparing for life as an adult can be overwhelming. Transitions Therapeutic Services has helped many teens going through growing pains

Common Teen Issues and How Therapy Can Help

  • Bullying. Fear of being bullied or rejected by your peers is stressful. The rejection and isolation can make your teen feel angry, scared or lonely. These feelings can result in behavioral problems or suicidal ideations. It can also follow them into adulthood if it isn't addressed now.

  • Relationships. Friendships and romantic relationships can be challenging at any age. As a teen, it is important to learn healthy boundaries when it comes to friends and partners. The wrong relationship can result in fear, isolation, anxiety, or physical harm. Therapy can help your teen connect with others in a positive, healthy, and safe way.

  • Body Image. As your teen's physical body changes, so does their emotions and views of their self-worth. Learning to love and care for your body in all stages is a skill your teen will need for the rest of their life.

  • Loss of a loved one. Losing someone isn't easy at any age. It can be especially hard for a teenager to communicate what is taking place. Understanding your teen's emotions is essential for dealing with loss. Anger, sadness, regret, pain, and avoidance are common grief responses. If they are not properly managed, these normal emotions can negatively impact your teen's life.

  • Family Issues. What goes on in the house can significantly impact your child's life outside of the home. Whether it's divorce, a complicated relationship with a parent, trouble getting along with siblings, or any other problem, family issues can negatively affect your child's life for the rest of their life. It's okay to talk about your child's concerns with a professional that can help them cope with family issues.

  • Alcohol & Drugs. Whether your child is using alcohol or drugs recreationally or suffering from an addiction, it's not too late to start talking about it. Using illegal drugs and alcohol is sometimes a means to socialize or fit in, and sometimes teens begin using these substances to cope.

  • Communication. Sometimes your teen doesn't have the words to explain how they feel. Or, your teen may not feel safe expressing those feelings to you. Through therapy, your child can learn to identify emotions, communicate needs, and improve the way he/she expresses themselves. This is a safe space to get support to understand what your teen needs to be happy and successful now and into adulthood. These are common issues your teenager may face, but even if your child is dealing with a unique problem, we are here to help conquer that too. Therapy is a tool to help make all of this easier.

  • Social Media. The constant exposure to negative stereotypes and racial discrimination can lead to feelings of isolation, low self-esteem, and depression. Additionally, the pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty standards and portray a perfect image online can contribute to anxiety and body image issues.

  • Suicide. Black teens are at a higher risk of suicide due to the stressors of systemic racism, discrimination, and poverty. It is important to provide access to mental health resources and support to help black teens cope with these challenges and prevent suicide.
